Continuing on with our (semi)weekly posts on faux techniques, we’ve arrived at some of our favorites: Metallics!
Metallic paints have been gaining popularity, not only for their incredible finishes, but also for their ease of use. Many metallics now come in a water-based formula, making clean up and paint extension a breeze. Here’s some samples of metallic finishes for use on walls or as accents for virtually any surface.
First up, The brushed metallics:
These types of metallic paint are more opaque, and therefore act more like traditional paints. often the first coat can be rolled on, and the second coat brushed out, in order to a give painterly, artful look that works well with the reflective qualities of the paint. As the subject or light-source moves, different brush strokes become dominant, giving a lively look to any wall.
They come in many colors like Silver and Copper (as above) as well as Bronze and Golds.
Here’s two examples of a custom metallic faux in a similarly brushed texture. This kind of finish is great for accent walls or even small rooms like bathrooms or walk-in closets. Some paint manufacturers will also custom-mix colors to match in metallic bases so clients can get the exact shade they want for their project.
There’s also a growing demand for more aggressive metallic textures, including aging and patina effects. Here’s two different samples of a Silver Patina finish, especially useful for accents, frames, or furniture refinishing.
You can also patina other metallic-painted surfaces. in this sample, we’ve painted some copper and iron, and used a black and green patina to age them both.
And in this sample, we’ve used an iron paint and added a few effects, like black patina and rust. It provides a very dramatic feel, probably best used for accenting.
As you can see, metallics offer a wide variety of uses and finishes for many different purposes. From full-sized rooms, to accent walls, to that old corner table, you’re no longer stuck using simple paint to achieve a drastic change.
Examples of these finishes, and much more, can be found in our Faux Portfolio. Check it out and let us know if you have any questions!
