We were asked to participate in a local event called "Hang Twenty" which, if you haven't heard of it (and i think this is the first year, so you probably haven't), is where 20 artists get surfboards to design and/or paint in any way they see fit... (think Chicago Cows but for the good ol' California beach) After their display, each board will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to local schools.

Our idea is centered around Hermosa Beach and it's history. Believe it or not, it's got quite a story...(Like pirates and such, no kiddin!) I would post some concept sketches but there really isn't any. We sent some in with the proposal, but its too loose to be posted. So, we're pretty much winging it, with the idea of paying tribute to some of the great history Hermosa has. (although I don't know if the pirates will make it in though...)

Anyway without further ado, the board.

I wish I had taken a picture before I started work on it, not only for posterity's sake, but also so when you saw this picture you'd go "wow whatta difference!"

 

Anyway's, here's the meat of it. We thought It'd be good to scour the net for old Hermosa pics and start decoupage-ing them on. Dawn had heard of this stuff called "Mod Podge" ( I had heard of this stuff call WTF? but she didn't buy any of that...)

 

Closer now, and it's shaping up. So I went ahead and glued all these pics down, it was quite fun. That Podge stuff though, look out, its pretty tough to get off when it dries...The images are of some of the city's first buildings, picture postcards, their locally famous windmill, some aerial shots of the downtown area, etc. The town even had a "Red Car" line that was a trolley that ran along the shore (well close to it) Nice way to travel, huh?
